Acne

MORE ABOUT THE PROCEDURE

Description

Acne (acne vulgaris) is a common skin disease that mainly affects the face, back and chest. It manifests as comedones, papules, pustules, nodules and sometimes cysts and scars. It most often begins during puberty, but can also occur in adulthood. Acne has a significant impact on self-esteem and quality of life.

Causes and pathogenesis

The development of acne is a multifactorial process, including:

Increased sebum production by the sebaceous glands

Follicular hyperkeratosis (hair follicle blockage)

Green star image

Growth of Cutibacterium acnes (the bacteria associated with acne)

Hormonal changes (androgens)

Genetic predisposition, stress, medications, cosmetics

Clinical forms

- Comedone acne – open (blackheads) and closed (whiteheads) comedones
- Papulopustular acne – inflammatory red pimples and pustules
- Nodular-cystic acne – deep, painful nodules and cysts
- Acne conglobata – severe form with fistulas and scars
- Adult acne (acne tarda) – often on the lower face and jawline

Diagnosis

- Clinically applied by a dermatologist
- If hormonal imbalance is suspected (especially in women) – tests for androgens, TSH, prolactin
- Differential diagnosis: rosacea, folliculitis, oral dermatosis

Additional methods:

Chemical peels, laser therapy, microdermabrasion

Professional facial cleansing (comedone extraction)

ATTENTION: The pharmacy market is full of cosmetics that claim to treat acne, but there is no convincing and independent data on their effectiveness. Acne treatment is performed only by a dermatologist.

Skin care

- Use of non-comedogenic cosmetics
- Gentle cleansing gel for oily/acne prone skin
- Avoiding aggressive rubbing or squeezing of pimples
- Regular photoprotection (SPF 30+), especially with retinoid therapy

Prognosis and symptoms

Most forms of acne respond well to treatment, but with delayed therapy or manipulations, they may remain:
- Atrophic scars (pits)
- Hyperpigmentation or redness
- Early and adequate therapy reduces the risk of permanent skin changes.
