Acne is the most common problem that teenagers and their parents come to me with. I know how frustrating it can be – especially at a time when appearance is so important. I have suffered from acne myself. The good news is that there are ways to keep acne under control and prevent it from leaving lasting scars on your skin or your self-esteem.
Here are my 5 tips for teenagers with acne:
1. Don't squeeze pimples
I know it's tempting. But squeezing only makes the inflammation worse, increases the risk of infection, and can lead to scars that last a lifetime. If cleaning is needed, it should be done by a medical esthetician, but no more than once a month.
2. Choosing the right cosmetics
This is aimed at young girls who like to wear heavy makeup meant for adults. With acne, it is important to use gentle, non-comedogenic products – they do not clog pores. Foundation is not prohibited, but it should be a light and easily removable product. Moisturizing cream and photoprotection can be used, but intended for oily, acne-prone skin.
3. Food matters, but it's not everything
I am often asked if chocolate and milk cause acne. The truth is that nutrition is not the only cause, but some foods can increase inflammation. It has been proven that the Western type of diet - burgers, fries, unsaturated fats - is a provoking factor for acne. A balanced diet with more vegetables and enough water always helps.
4. See a dermatologist on time
Don't wait until your acne gets "very bad." The sooner you start treatment, the easier it is to control your breakouts and prevent scarring. Treatment may include creams, medications, or procedures, depending on the severity.
5. Be patient and consistent
There is no „miracle cure“ in a week. Even the best therapies take time to work. When you follow the recommendations and have a consistent routine, the results come and are lasting. To know if a therapy works, it must be applied for at least 6-8 weeks. Stopping the product after 1-2 weeks because it „doesn’t work“ is pointless and ineffective.
My message
Acne is a temporary condition, but the scars – both physical and emotional – can remain if left untreated. I believe that with the right approach, a little discipline and support, every boy and girl can get through this period with clear skin and preserved self-confidence.
